KENYAN UNIVERSITIES AND HIV Research has shown that university students are among the high risk groups in Kenya prone to HIV/ AIDS. Four percent (4%) of the whole of university population are HIV positive. The research reveals that this is mostly in universities that are located in large towns such as Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, Eldoret and Kisumu. In Nairobi 30percent of girls between the ages of 15-19 are HIV positive. In the University of Nairobi one or two students are dying every month due to HIV. Many students are HIV positive when they join university while others get positive in the course of their study The drastic increase in the number of rich single mothers in major towns has further fueled the spread of HIV among the youths. These rich women entice the young and naive boys into cheap sex with money and later leaving them in desperation. Law students, medical students and engineering students are some of the most affected groups. This is catalyzed by the myth that siring a child with a bright student will bring forth a bright child. Female students also indulge with sugar daddies, a handful of those who engage with sugar daddies hail from poor background. According to Jane (not her real name) a 3rd year student at technical university of Kenya most of her colleagues engage with sugar daddies to supplement the little pocket money they receive from their poor families. ”my dad cannot give me enough pocket money to fund the kind of lifestyle I desire to live here in campus and therefore I have to supplement the little pocket money with other activities”. Jane comments shying off. Apart from those who hail from humble background, some other students from rich families also engage in illicit sex with sugar daddies just for pleasure while others do so to fund the flashy lifestyle they want to live. Male students also have not been left out, with a good number of them being involved with sugar mammies .This is especially those students taking high ranked courses such as engineering and medicine. Some of these sugar mummies are not just after sex but some are sperm thieves. They give good life to these students who intern pay them by satisfying them sexually. Later when they get pregnant they vanish leaving the student miserable suffering from financial imbalances. This situation replicates in Moi University, Kenyatta University, Maseno University, Mombasa technical university, technical university of Kenya and university of Eldoret among others major universities. According to university health officials at Nairobi University, it is estimated that for every 10 female students with HIV, there are 14 to 15 male students who are affected with virus. W.H.O. statistics indicates that 30% of Kenyan students seeking admission to foreign universities are infected. The most hit universities in terms of infected cases include; 1. University of Nairobi. 2. Kenyatta University. 3. Moi University. 4. Mount Kenya university 5. Multimedia university. 6. Maseno University. 7. Technical university of Kenya. 8. Egerton University. 9. Technical university of Mombasa. 10. Maseno University. 11. Masinde Muliro University. 12. Jaramogi Odinga university Story by sir Kabiru
